Pros

The people seem nice enough. Space has much potential. Compensation is decent, & benefits are probably OK for most.

Cons

The code-base is under-documented & disorganized: seemingly small functional changes can easily involve dozens of files. It's also overly engineered, but in areas that aren't conducive to product health & maintainability. Working around crazy tech debt, poor practices & dicey processes take up more time than actual problem solving. Unnecessary complexity & tons of runtime feature enable configs used institutionally lead to many many bugs that are difficult to reproduce. Myopic management fails to recognize it as a problem. Engineer performance criteria is inadequate & heavily favor engineers who have been at the company for many years: need to be a rock star to break even. Onboarding wholly inadequate for engineer hires: it's mostly HR stuff & customer training tutorials focused on 1 or 2 product areas. At the mercy of tribal knowledge & reverse engineering for initial several months. Stress of tight deadline expectations mean your requests for help often go unanswered. Deadlines often bumped forward, often cutting time in half. Gaining access to key systems is haphazard: no list when on-boarding, no clear direction on where to obtain access once a need is determined. Cheap version of big name health insurance. Last job was using same insurance company - different plan: non-generics cost me at least 4x out of pocket than I ever paid previously for them. The familiar problem with "unlimited PTO/sick time": offered, but use is frowned upon. Trying to find employee resources in intranet can be annoying - a lot of outdated material lingering.

Pros

The benefits are solid, including stock options and unlimited PTO, though I didn't feel especially encouraged to actually use the time off. The C-suite has a clear vision for where the company is headed. Peers are genuinely good to work with, and there's a shared sense that people want to do well and want each other to succeed. It's a growing company, so the stock could carry real value over the long run if that growth holds.

Cons

Leadership at the department level was my main concern. In my experience, the management style made it hard to raise concerns or disagree without it affecting how you were viewed on the team. Direction was often unclear and expectations shifted, which made it difficult to know what success looked like. Over my time here I saw a lot of capable people leave, some by choice and some not, and the turnover lined up with those leadership gaps.
