Pros

Mostly kind staff that are respectful.

Cons

Each article is more work than anyone realizes. The editors have different preferences which can be confusing and frustrating when pitching and submitting finished work. Sometimes they don't even really do full revisions (aka editing) but make the writer do it, on top of finding the right in-text links, buying and using Grammarly, and doing all of the photo editings. This takes hours, and you get a flat rate of 15 an article. In reality, it feels much less on the hour. If you do enough articles you get bonuses which is okay, but it's also really hard to achieve these bonuses seeing that even if you to take this on full time, there's no guarantee you can realistically make the goals and get your bonus in a reasonable amount of time. They often ask for revisions, changing entries altogether, even changing the subjects of the articles altogether, and they don't always check for duplicates. The work is so much more than it seems and you get paid so little. It's frustrating and while you can learn to get better, sometimes it feels like they don't want you to be earning the bonuses (aka--a livable wage). How it works is you take on or pitch topics--they can't seem to look through the pitches fast enough. Makes me wonder if they do this on purpose so people aren't able to do as many articles at a time (especially considering a lot of the pitches don't even go through). Don't work for this place unless you're stuck somewhere and really, really, really need the money and the credit for having worked for this company. At least, don't be a list writer.

Pros

Genuinely some of the smartest content people I've ever worked with. Super dedicated editors who make you want to do a better job because they care so much. Robust training and feedback system. Fun content.

Cons

Not necessarily a bad thing but some editors gave TOO much feedback. A bit more flexibility to use our best judgment for formatting/amount of links/images used would have been good.

Pros

Perhaps the only thing worthwhile about this site is the everyday writers who show up to publish content. Their passion is infectious, and their pitches are often excellent if only leadership was willing to listen.

Cons

The only advice I can give to anyone looking to work here is to run. SR is not only inhumane at the most unforgivable level to its workers, but it is comically inept. Leadership doesn't know what to do other than cannibalize itself, and directions are somehow both entirely obscured while being mandated. Truly, there are few newsrooms more dysfunctional than SR or any operated by its parent company. Avoid this publishing purgatory at all costs unless you are getting paid good money.
