Pros

Met some great people and it was a good place to work as a first job out of uni. I never worked past my hours and the office location in central London was a positive.

Cons

Most importantly, the CEO is wildly unprofessional and has zero experience in running a business before starting Satchel. Every attempt to improve staff wellbeing is performative and disingenuous at best. Long-standing members of staff are brainwashed and are used to the status quo. They are likely still there because they feed the egos of the executive team, by being obedient, and never challenging the toxic business practices in place. This is highlighted even further by the operations and sales directors describing things as “a bit gay”. Casual homophobia isn’t exactly common at Satchel, but it wasn’t a surprise. There is also no HR team to report these things to, probably by design. Often, the person you had to report issues to was your line manager, which is incredibly unhelpful if you have complaints about your line manager. The company values are used as a stick to beat you with. Members of staff are remunerated, by way of bonus, based on how they meet these values. One of these values is optimism, which puts anyone who may struggle with mental health issues in a position where they are paid less than colleagues with a sunny disposition. Opportunities for career progression are non-existent and there is literally zero scope for training or development. If you have any professional experience then I would avoid working for satchel at all costs. If you’re fresh out of uni and desperate for a job then apply, but make sure to be looking for better opportunities in the meantime. That being said, with fierce competition and appalling staff retention, satchel may well have closed its doors within the next year.

Satchel Response
4y
Hi there, Really sorry to hear your time at Satchel was not as positive as the majority of our staff experience. We always endeavour to create a fun and hardworking work environment where staff can take on responsibility, take pride in their work and ultimately grow as individuals during their time with us. We offer tools in which staff are able to share any issues they have via an online tool (officevibe) this feedback is anonymous and our executive team review the feedback left and endeavour to review practises in the business based off of this. Good news is we currently have a positive and improving NPS score from our staff, so the vast majority are telling us they are happy in their roles and with the direction of the business. As a reminder our company values are Pioneering / Be the best / Warmth / Integrity. So not sure if you have confused us with another company as optimism isn’t one of them. Staff who excel at Satchel are typically hard working (will sometimes work more than just 9-5), friendly, motivated individuals, who would like to make a difference to education across the world. We wish you every success in your next endeavour and hope you find a better fit in your next role.

Pros

Pay is decent. Benefits are okay.

Cons

While the pay is decent, the culture leaves a lot to be desired. It's a high-stress environment with little recognition for the effort many put in, and some employees are treated very poorly. Raising concerns to management has resulted in termination for a couple. If you're in a position where you need to make money quickly and can overlook the way some of your peers are treated, you might get by here. But, if you’re looking for long-term growth, respect, and a healthy workplace culture, I’d look elsewhere.
