Pros

Sapp Bros was a very welcome and much needed changed from corporate America when I originally started there. Each location was allowed a great deal of autonomy to run the location as they saw fit to help grow the business which led to many success stories at different locations around the company. Another pro when I started the company was their profit sharing program. Bill Sapp started this program with the intent of taking care of the employees that drive the locations success. My first few years with the company were very rewarding. My final pro were some of the great people that I worked with over the years including Bill Sapp. I made many friends over my tenure with Sapp Bros that remain my friends to this day.

Cons

1. The benefits. Their insurance is rather costly with somewhat limited coverage. The amount of PTO that you received was low compared to what is being offered at most companies. 2. The profit sharing has been getting progressively worse over the last four years. My perception is that they have been looking to phase out the profit sharing as it kept going down more and more each year even though the company is still doing well. The cuts have been affecting the people that need the profit sharing the most. This would be the people at the locations such as the managers, cashiers, and janitorial staff. The executive staff has not suffered through any cuts in their profit sharing. The perception in the stores is that this is being done to increase the stock payouts to the stock holders. I would recommend using this benefit as a way to get new employees if you truly are not going to pay it out. 3. I felt like they created a culture of fear and dishonesty. An example of this would be during a winter day a couple years ago. There was a big diesel fuel spill that covered the back half of the lot behind the diesel pumps all the way to the road. This spill was well over 100 gallons and took a lot of time to clean up. A couple executives from the corporate office supervised the cleanup and told us that we needed to get it done quickly before we were reported to the EPA. This size fuel spill should have been reported by them and they knew as much. 4. They forced their religious and political beliefs onto the management team during manager meetings. One example of this was being expected to pray and lead prayed during the meetings without knowing what your religious beliefs are. Another blatant example of this was being forced to what a documentary called "Agenda". Without going into specific details this movie promoted some very extreme political views which made me very uncomfortable with the leadership of the company. I do not feel that mandatory manager meetings are the time or place to promote your political agenda. 5. Lack of regard for employment law. I saw many good managers terminated without cause to make room for younger managers that were not as well paid. These were managers that had been with the company 20-30 years. I also witnessed another time where a deposit went missing and they interviewed/interrogated employees of a location for hours at a time without a break which is illegal. There were many instances where they suspected different employees of stealing and made accusations to later find out they were wrong. 6. Inequality. The executive team at home office is entirely comprised of white men. There is virtually no representation in the executive team of women or anybody of a different race. This leads to very single minded views of how to grow the organization. 7. The politics. Now I am not naive to believe that this is not the case in most companies, but my experience with it was horrible. If you did not say the right things to the right people or "brown nose" certain members of the executive team, you were basically doomed for the rest of your tenure with the company. I saw what myself and other perceived to be "ineffective" members of the management team at the home office stay ahead in the company because they always went to lunch with the president or agreed with everything that he said. This obviously is my opinion, but it comes from years of observing this behavior.
