Pros

Company car was nice. Work-life balance can be really good when you're up and running - you get time to get your nails done. Easy to lie about "meetings". Some of the staff were lovely and offered support.

Cons

Some of the staff are not so lovely. Share anything personal with your boss and it will be discussed in great detail with other colleagues. They have no formal training - anywhere, for any job - for a retail bank it's quite shocking. Training will involve being chucked in some unsuspecting persons diary at the last minute, and going through things that are barely relevant to you day-to-day job. Boss lied about the company car (you get your pick of XYZ, but doesn't mention that all the cars come with a cost out of your own pocket - something that had happened repeatedly to new hires) Boss lies to HR about how they've offered you extra training despite repeatedly refusing extra training for the previous 6 months. Boss would type out the conversations of your one-to-one and get you to sign it off. What I later realized he was doing to avoid writing any of my complaints in there - it was only ever my to-do list. This was later used against me by HR. I was asked about my sexuality within an hour of meeting my boss in person (day 3 in the job) - and not in a "bantery" way. I was once "warned" about my colleagues sexuality.

Pros

Of all the companies I have worked for, Santander has had the strongest training program. The training was comprehensive, well-structured, and especially valuable for employees who are new to the banking industry. Additionally, Santander's ONE software is by far the most intuitive and user friendly banking platform I have used, making it easy to learn and navigate while supporting efficient daily operations.

Cons

Like most retail banking roles, there is a strong sales component. With fewer customers visiting branches due to online banking and ATMs, much of the day is spent making outbound calls to existing clients, trying to set appointments, and push products and services. While I understand the importance of sales in the industry, I personally felt there was significant pressure to prioritize sales goals over relationship building and client service, which I was not comfortable with.
