Pros

The pros of working at Rocket Science aren't really pros of Rocket Science as a company so much as the perks that come with the consulting industry by default. You work with many different clients with many different technologies. You learn a large breadth of skills and network with some good companies that will sometimes try and scoop you up as an employee of their own. There are amazing opportunities but none of them are to be found within Rocket Science.

Cons

I don't even know where to begin. Management seems to do little more than collect an inexcusably larger pay than anybody else in this sham "flat organization" they try and sell. Any actual management seems to be tossed back and fourth like a hot potato, delegated out, or ignored until it goes away. The CEO is pretty much entirely absent, acts as if it's nothing but good times and then surprises you all with horrible news, typically delivered through others or the safety of email. In fact, "Everything's fine until it isn't" seems to be the management style of Rocket Science as a whole. The place is just an HR mess. There was only actual HR for a brief time and they were let go in one of many rounds of "oops, we're out of money" surprise lay-offs. If you try to leave the company on your own accord, you will be met with hurt feelings and gossip. There is no safety net for employees on any front. They're consistently over-worked, under-paid, and subject to sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior to a ridiculous degree. Rocket Science tries to recruit with the promise of culture and the friends you could have. The reality is that there is an extreme disconnect between management and ground-level engineers. The engineers have a bit of a culture of their own and find unity in the things they endure, but the one-love company they try and sell does not exist. I promise you, you will despise management. I never once received a review or a raise with Rocket Science. I was gifted some stock that turned out to just be pretty worthless of a deal from every angle but the CEO's tax obligations. Receiving and offing Rocket Science stock actually cost me. I earned negative dollars. I wouldn't recommend Rocket Science for employment or for service for any reason.

Pros

People & Culture are outstanding, the work is fast paced and challenging, and you have autonomy to get the job done. What more could you ask? The haters on glassier (and i know who you are!) didn't fit the changes in the company, sour grapes. Management has done everything they said they were going to do for as long as I've been here, and are more transparent than anywhere I've ever worked. And the tone gets set at the top -- I just had an hour long conversation with the CEO about why he moved to Portland (we have an office there), why he moved back to SF, the future of the company, his philosophy on life -- the guy just puts it all out there. The management team is super positive and supportive, but not bossy -- if you are independent and don't need hand holding it's a great vibe. They have recently announced some changes to how we are structured to make it less management heavy, less non technical account manager types and more consulting, all of which are the right moves IMO. I like the people and the direction of this firm.

Cons

Pay isn't A++, but it's a small company and pays like one. I'd like some more firmed up HR processes, but they have been starting to do that over the last month and i love it and hate it.
