Hi, Doug here.
I was very sorry to read that you feel let down by your experience with us, and while I do not recognize RG in some of your statements, I respect your feelings. It’s also difficult to respond fully given the absence of detail of your role and circumstance, but I will do the best that I can.
I can’t question your feelings, but I do believe RG values all of its people before, during and after their time with the business. As with any business sometimes we have to make difficult decisions, and those negatively impacted can disagree with our decisions, but we treat our people respectfully, honestly and fairly. Separation payments are well above standard as we want our people to transition to their next opportunity smoothly, and in the case of employee equity, our people are allowed to keep their vested shares even outside of the company. We are thoughtful with our decisions and strive to provide open and honest feedback on performance and other factors that might have influenced our decisions. If we haven’t lived up to this please reach out to me or Rob Hicks because we want to know.
We pay competitive salaries and as you indicated we have top shelf benefits, offices and a share ownership scheme for all employees. We don’t pay the highest salaries and we don’t pay the lowest, but we balance the needs of our people and the business as best we can and the long tenure of many of our dedicated and passionate staff are a testament to our efforts.
On career progression, as a fast-growing business, there are a lot of opportunities for our people to develop and utilize their skills across the business. RG is full of people who have been provided opportunities and grown into roles they would not have been offered in other businesses. We care about our people’s career progression at RG and beyond, and we have devoted greater resources each year to learning and development allowing our team to build their skills to use either at RG or in their next job. We do not have a large corporate hierarchy where you can expect to spend a lifetime in a preset pattern of title and salary progression, rather we have a culture of meritocracy where one’s passion, commitment, and abilities are recognized and celebrated with greater responsibilities and opportunities to grow. People can reach the end of progression at RG in some areas, but we believe that they are well prepared for new opportunities when they feel they must move on.
Encroachment on personal time can definitely happen at RG which is fast moving, competitive and full of passionate and committed professionals, but we respect work-life balance. This is reflected in our flexible working practices, universal 7 weeks of holiday allowance, 12-month parental leave policy and company sponsored wellness initiatives.
Finally, while I won’t challenge your personal perception, leadership and I do try to broadly recognize all areas of the business. Sales absolutely get recognized for their successes, but so does service, support, development, product, finance, marketing, IT and every other area of the business. Perhaps our balance can be assessed, but at RG not an hour goes by where someone is not being recognized on our MORE social wall (Moments of Recognition Everyday), our widely viewed Slack channels or on our internal communications platform boom! We emphasize both leadership and broad peer-to-peer recognition at RG.
I also have to comment on your critique of our product and (inaccurate) challenge to our spending priorities. Firstly, I hope that while working with RG you lived our Speak Up value regarding your views on how to improve our product. Nevertheless, we will finish this financial year with record sales across all geographies, and record (market leading) spending across our employee discounts platform. We continue to invest in improvements including better retail offers and a new mobile app that has improved the user experience of hundreds of thousands of our customers. We can always improve, but our product is constantly evolving and we invest millions each year to enhance our technical offering.
Finally, you make the point that we have nice offices, but then challenge our spending priorities. The important workspace enhancements that we made to London, Birmingham, Boston, Sydney and Melbourne and the project we are currently implementing for our great team in Plovdiv, Bulgaria have had zero impact on product or other priorities. Whatever we have spent on product and other areas of the business would have been spent regardless of what we spent on facilities, and workspace is an important way in which we make the world a better place to work for our own people.
In closing, I am sorry that you had an imperfect experience with RG and I do care about how you feel. I would love to discuss it with you personally if you wish. Thank you for submitting your review, and I wish you good luck and success in your career.
