Introverts Beware - Captioner Red Bee Media Employee Review

Pros

* Good short-term job for introverts. You sit in a soundproof room/booth with minimal human interaction. The novelty wears off quickly though (despite what Google says). * You watch TV shows while transmitting captions. Watching re-runs of your fave shows was awesome. Watching golf/darts/billiards wasn't. * You're proofreading every shift, so feel like you're putting your English major to good use * Days off on weekdays

Cons

* You have to be super-punctual. Even 5min of lateness is frowned upon. That can be hard when you have to catch public transport to get to work, with inevitable delays * Rosters can be messy. Some days, you start at 6am. Some days, you finish at 11pm. That can mess up your circadian rhythms / sleep-wake cycle. Extroverts are usually OK with this. Introverts - BEWARE * You're exposed to negative news stories (war, terrorism, crime) EVERY shift. That can screw up your psychology * Workstations aren't ergonomically sound. I saw people end up with carpal tunnel syndrome (wearing wrist braces) because of the fast typing speed and hourly deadlines. * Salary is lower than that of admin assistants in regular office jobs. The overtime pay is thus disappointing

Thank you for providing a comprehensive review. I understand that it’s difficult to work shifts, however, this is mainly driven by the nature of the job. We always try to accommodate employees as much as possible, for example some prefer to work late shifts, others early, and we try to allow for this when scheduling. There would always be at least 11 hours between shifts to rest and recover. I also take your point about negative news stories, again unfortunately this is something that cannot be avoided. We do have safeguards in place and encourage everyone to notify their manager if such stories affect them and they would rather work on something else. We make sure everyone completes a DSE assessment to ensure their workstations are properly set up, and if strains happen, we take them seriously and work with the employee and their doctor on how to remedy the problem. We conduct regular pay reviews and set our salary levels in line with the market.
