Pros

Good place to begin a career and excellent introduction to working for a large company with industry standard processes. Depending on your initial assignment, it can lead to solid career advancement. Benefits compare nominally with other aerospace companies of similar size. Excellent PTO benefits for young employees, good 401k, no retirement plan. As of 2014, no profit sharing program for IIS, although small monies are available if your peers submit you for awards. On balance, a good place for a fresh CS grad to start, but middling for other disciplines such as engineering, business. This location is heavily focused on SW development with systems engineering another large emphasis. Systems engineering is implemented similarly to Lockheed with a heavy emphasis on requirements development, following a process, powerpoint slide creation and little to no actual engineering. Many work groups and low level managers treat team members with respect and value their views and contributions. There is a strong commitment to diversity, which may work for or against potential employees.

Cons

Advancement depends on who you know, whether they like you (similar to most companies) and whether your current assignment happens to be on the critical path. Like most huge companies, you are viewed primarily as a unit of labor and visibility to management is limited due to a matrixed organizational structure. On some programs uncompensated overtime is mandated due to poor program bidding - be sure to inquire about this during your interview. Nationally the company provides significantly better advancement and compensation opportunities than in the Denver metro area. For those willing to move, this could be a good career option. For those seeking management, the company offers a decent career track. For those seeking a technical career, look elsewhere as you will be squandering your time here.

Pros

I worked at Raytheon for over 4 years and had a great experience. The company provided many learning and growth opportunities. I was promoted twice during my tenure with the company, and my responsibility increased significantly. I felt like my management supported me and provided me with the career mentorship that I was seeking. I felt empowered and respected during my time there.

Cons

It can be difficult to work at such a large defense contractor company because of all the process and red tape. Things can move slowly, you have to be patient and pick your battles. That being said, if you learn how to work within the system, you can make a significant impact here!
