Pros

- Working with incredibly talented and lovely people - Beautiful environment - Opportunity to share your POV and grow your leadership beyond managing typical retail KPIs

Cons

- Lack of upward growth unless you live in the Bay Area. No remote, hybrid or flexible options for those looking to grow but are not able to live in the Bay - Senior leaders (field leaders and up) are out of touch with the reality their galleries face and refuse to even work a weekend or evening to understand the pace (or advocate for closing earlier since there is no business after 6/7pm) - Unrealistic expectations for metrics making it impossible to bonus; you get your bonus arrangement a month or 2 into the quarter based on a net shipped goal which is mostly outside your control. In 6 years, I can count on 1 hand the number of times I bonused. - consistent and pervasive push for new ideas at the company without solving current critical problems; finding the answer in the problem does not mean sweeping it under the rug or making it worse by heaping more pressure on failing systems. - There is no real acknowledgement of DEI. I championed this for many years with limited success. - Operating “galleries” under antiquated retail hours. Aspiring young designers didn’t spend $50k+ on an education to work as a glorified salesperson until 9pm 7 days a week. I loved my time at this company but eventually it broke me. I gave my heart and soul for my team and it took a huge toll on me personally to leave. I’ve since watched most of my team leave with the shift in management and have fully supported them in their post RH journey. Don’t be fooled by the Values. They are incredible but they will be weaponized against you. This company will not change their fundamental DNA in the things that matter most in work life balance and long term career growth.

Pros

One of the strongest aspects of this role is the autonomy. I’m trusted to make decisions that genuinely support the customer experience without constant approval from leadership. If I believe an exchange plus a $250 gift card is the right solution to preserve a relationship, I’m empowered to do that. That level of trust creates confidence and allows us to move quickly when issues arise. Leadership is accessible when needed, especially in escalated situations. I’ve never felt left alone to manage something beyond my scope. There is also regular voluntary overtime available, which is a plus for those looking to increase their hours. For someone transitioning from another industry, the environment feels more structured and brand-focused, which has been refreshing

Cons

The clientele can be challenging. Some customers assume that spending thousands of dollars entitles them to treat frontline employees disrespectfully, even when those employees had no involvement in the original issue. It can also be frustrating to hold a boundary with a customer, only to see it reversed after escalation. While I understand the desire to preserve relationships, it can unintentionally undermine employee confidence and consistency in standards. Because RH carries so many collections and product variations, the learning curve is steep. Customers often expect immediate, detailed product knowledge, which takes time to develop.
