Pros

Coworkers and gear deals, a few managers

Cons

This could take a while. Been here a long time. The erosion of REI is truly staggering for all that know the company well. The current push for credit cards is morale crushing and goes against so much of what this company used to represent. Some managers are very good and most of those have in the company for a very long time, the fall of the company shows on their face when discussing it. Hours are so wildly inconsistent I feel terrible for my coworkers, who struggle to know if they can make expenses. Worker perks have almost vanished from previous years. REI buyers and product developers have to be some of the worst. Investing huge sums into garbage footwear that are almost immediately on clearance, garments that fit so poorly you wonder if they even research what customers want and what other manufacturers do, customers are puzzled on the fit after trying on a legacy brand, buyers also buy colors in footwear that my coworkers get complaints about knowing on manufacturer website more appealing colors are available, other rei gear doesn’t seem well thought out also. REI culture truly is a myth now, used for green selling , but hollow. The feeling from the floor staff is top executives really do not understand the former culture And ethos that built this company, maybe they they don’t care , they’re making tons and will eventually leave with their pockets full. I really have little confidence REI will survive as it was , most likely sold off to a giant conglomerate and turned into just another soulless entity.

Pros

People and incredible work culture. REI truly walks the walk when it comes to company culture. Significant amount of focus on people and values in a genuine way. Exceptional benefits and pay. Making medical coverage available for all employees part time and full time.

Cons

Not many negatives to share.

Pros

Most coworkers, some managers, discounts, outfitting people properly without extra nonsense

Cons

Some truly horrible managers, pressure to sell credit cards is a morale killer, the union people. Employees drinking the union kool aid fail to see the company’s position, REI cannot give higher pay, better benefits , consistent hours, etc… with the erratic revenue stream that comes in , if a 5 year average is X in revenue and 5 year average is Y on wages and costs, how are they supposed to increase wages and benefits? It’s numbers and they don’t line up, if REI gives the increases which increases the expenses greatly, they will cut staff, a lot fewer employees which will eliminate a bunch of union supporters, an REI job is not supposed to be a lucrative deal, when you get hired the part time , part time plus and full time options are there and you choose what you want fully understanding what hours you are going to get at minimum, they will hire those positions on a need basis, to cry later that you don’t make enough money is your fault, the terms were clear and you signed off on them. The union is promising rainbows , reality will be far different, careful what you wish for
