Pros

RAINN’s mission attracts some truly phenomenal employees. Undoubtedly, I met some of my greatest friends and colleagues here. The work is fulfilling and important.

Cons

RAINN’s work culture is astonishingly toxic. I personally experienced and witnessed so much racism, sexism, ableism… not to mention, my colleagues and I were paid practically nothing. People were punished for taking any time off. At the end of the day, it’s a top-down problem. The CEO Scott Berkowitz does not care about the mission, he only cares about profiting off of survivors’ pain. He uses abuse and manipulation tactics with employees throughout the organization. I can’t advise you enough to not work here for the sake of your own mental health.

Pros

Working on the DoD Safe Helpline has been a rewarding experience with some unique benefits and challenges. One of the major positives is the lower queue compared to the NSAH hotline, which makes it easier to focus on providing meaningful support to callers and visitors. While there are fewer calls overall, the quality of interactions remains high and impactful including with chats.

Cons

The work can be difficult because it is direct service and you are hearing some graphic content on sexual assaxlt, abxse and rxpe. If you cannot handle this topic, this may not be the place for you. Additionally, the staffing can sometimes feel stretched. Due to the collective bargaining agreement, part-time employees are only required to work 24 hours per month, which can occasionally leave the team running with just you and one other staff member during certain shifts. While this setup is standard, it does highlight the importance of adaptability and teamwork. On the plus side, RAINN offers wellness resources that make a big difference. From the Employee Assistance Program, paid wellness days to telemedicine and mindfulness platforms like Headspace, the organization truly prioritizes staff well-being. Some staff just don't use it. These tools have been incredibly helpful in managing the stresses of the job and maintaining a positive work-life balance.
