Pros
This review is for the QB3-Central group (there's a separate group based on campus that focuses on academic labs). The group moved to Berkeley from UCSF in 2022 and has become a tight-knit organization that has hired some extremely high-performing people in the area of startup support and innovation in life science. It is a small group and most people wear multiple hats. Things are continually moving toward a more coherent strategy. Leadership thinks big, which is inspirational. Everyone has a very positive, collaborative attitude -- it helps that the general environment at Berkeley at the moment is also similar.
Cons
University administration, particularly HR and Purchasing, seem designed to make your job and life more difficult. There's a mismatch between the janky, old enterprise systems and bureaucratic structure and the reality that on campus there are hundreds of small, understaffed, underresourced groups which have to figure out these giant clunky systems for themselves. I'd say bureaucracy eats up 30% of your time. This is not a QB3 issue, it's a Berkeley issue.
