Pros

If you are a part time worker, Publix will try to schedule you for as many hours as possible while full time workers will often have a hard time getting the hours they need. It seems that Publix would prefer to have workers that are not allowed any benefits which is cheaper for the company. The irony is that they often charge double what other stores charge, while giving you a smaller item than what you could've bought for half the price somewhere else.

Cons

- Upper management is extremely anal/OCD about the way the store is kept. - Carol Jenkins Barnett uses money from Publix to fund her own special interest lobbying efforts - This attitude and pressure trickles down to store managers and individual workers as well. (Everyone gets chewed out regularly) - it also means closing the store takes forever. - Workers expected to provide perfect customer service and high productivity even if time is lost when several customers pull them away for help - LOW Worker morale (have encountered more than 3 people in break room debating whether they should quit before clocking in) - If you have a closing shift (anything till 11pm) be prepared to be there until 1:30 am or later most days (they do not mention this in training). - Also be prepared to close one day and open the day after (this is a very common practice, especially if you are part time). - If you don't have a closing shift, be prepared to be asked to close. - Work life balance is abysmal - Benefits and stock options are touted as great, but Publix management will work hard to ensure you are just under the # of hours that would qualify you for any benefits whatsoever. Publix employees are forced to put on a smile but the oppressive workplace is very draining and it shows in their tired and depressed faces.

Pros

Amazing 401K, free stock after one year of employment, health insurance is very good for part-time employees if only getting it for yourself, management always approves time off requests, hours are always available, will work around school schedules, tuition reimbursement program, will reimburse you for gas for work-related expenses as needed and will put you in a hotel as needed for work-related reasons that are more than 50 miles from your home.

Cons

Not every store is the same, some stores are run better than others, some managers look down upon people with disabilities, and some see people with disabilities the same as someone without disabilities, they are very big about favoritism, you have to work a lot to earn a vacation, the company does not give out sick time and full-time gets the most benefits and is next to impossible to get full-time. Also, you practically have to be a former employee with a clean record or related in some way to a current employee to get a job with the company though Kentucky Publix's don't quite function that way.
