Pros
I love being able to screen and select my own clients. I keep all the of profits, rather than sharing with an agency. Compensation in private practice is 2-5x higher than in agencies or group practices. You set your own hours and control your work/ life balance.
Cons
Private practice can be lonely. It's important to maintain connections through professional groups so you stay current. No benefits package, so having a spouse with a traditional job is key.
