No Support, No Security, No Pay, No Thanks! - Graduate Assistant Portland State University Employee Review

Pros

All the faculty I had the opportunity to work under were wonderful people.

Cons

Administration is choking anything that isn't a STEM field right now, and it shows. Long-time adjuncts and full time professors without tenure are being let go, programs are being cut, grad assistantships are getting slashed across the board. What remains are programs with miserable pay no benefits of any kind and where you're expected to do full time equivalent work while also studying. It will be sad seeing PSU's prestige go down the drain in the coming years, and it's all because administration can't go without a seven figure yearly salary. But hey, Compsci is getting a new building.

Pros

It's a really great opportunity to get up and learn to teach your own class rather than just working with a professor as a TA. Really comprehensive and rewarding experience.

Cons

The pay is unlivable unless you're not paying rent. The contract is 15 hours a week, but obviously if you're just starting to teach as a GA, you put in WAY more than 15 hours of work. If you come up against a problem, there is very little oversight or support.
