Great experience overall - Teaching Assistant Portland State University Employee Review

Pros

Great university, the professors I worked with were super helpful and encouraging. If you put in a real effort, ti will be recognized. The university is big enough to get exposed to a variety of tasks and departments but not too big to where you lose track of how your work impacts the department you're in.

Cons

Can't really think of anything. The professors need to continue being so awesome and helpful.

Pros

Collaborative team culture with excellent mentorship, meaningful research work, and opportunities to learn new technical and analytical skills.

Cons

Workload can be demanding at times, with tight deadlines and occasional lack of clarity around project priorities.

Pros

It's a really great opportunity to get up and learn to teach your own class rather than just working with a professor as a TA. Really comprehensive and rewarding experience.

Cons

The pay is unlivable unless you're not paying rent. The contract is 15 hours a week, but obviously if you're just starting to teach as a GA, you put in WAY more than 15 hours of work. If you come up against a problem, there is very little oversight or support.
