Pros
Couldn't say, they offered me a job knowing that I had turned down a job offer elsewhere just so I could interview with them. A few days later I contacted them and stated that it appears they work out of a van, which is what the photos of their vehicle look like online, and I was wanting to find out what exactly they worked out of, how they went about providing the vehicle, and I stated that if they provide brand new vehicles, like the last remote surveyor I worked for, that I would prefer a pickup as opposed to something enclosed because a pickup is more efficient. I made it clear that it didn't matter either way, that I was grateful for whatever was provided, and was only putting my preference out there in case that was an option. A few days later I emailed them and asked what time their crews started the work day, and explained that the last company didn't care as long as the work got done. I made it perfectly clear that i was asking because the previous remote company I worked for allowed us that freedom, and I didn't want to assume they were as flexible as my previous employer. I explained that there were days that we had to meet a client at a fixed time, and if that job was in an isolated area, it wouldn't be practical to start at 7am, milk the clock for four hours, then meet he client. Rather than do that, my previous employer would allow us to start later in the day. I don't know what kind of work load polysurveying typically gives their remote crews, and I was trying to express my desire to do whatever they expected, yet still be prudent when it comes to company spending and their job cost compared to billable hours. Then 5 days before i was to fly to get my equipment, in an effort to be prepared for the 2 weeks to a month I would be away from home for training, I asked them if they had any program in place that provided per diem in advance as opposed to afterwards. They knew I had been unemployed for a few months, and I told them I would need to figure out a way to eat while i was away from home, and that If they didn't have anything set up to assist new hires, that I would need to borrow money elsewhere. They responded to my question by telling me that they were withdrawing my job offer because I told them I wanted a specific vehicle, to start the day at 10:30am, and them to pay me in advance. I was absolutely blown away. I had emphasized that I was only relaying my past experience as my reasoning for asking the questions I asked, and never once made it seem like I was expecting special treatment or considerations.
Cons
I don't know what ever happened to it never hurting to ask. I can't believe they would effectively destroy my career over me giving them details about my past experience working remotely. The 2 jobs I turned down were the only 2 reasonable options I have in my profession. Any other potential employer is at least 1.5 hours from my place of residence. I'm not in a position to drive 3-4 hours a day to commute to work, and because i turned down 2 jobs I already had start dates scheduled for, I am completely out of options unless I want to work at fast food or Walmart. I have over 10 years as a party chief, and over 16 in the Surveying industry. Polysurveying has quite literally ruined my professional career over a simple misunderstanding. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
