Great Start to Medical Career - Billing Pocono Health System Employee Review

Pros

The medical benefits are incredible and there are many perks to being an employee. If you get medical services done within the Pocono Health System, all you owe is a $10 copay, regardless of PCP or specialist. Everything else gets adjusted off as a courtesy for being a PMC employee. There are discounts all over town (like at restaurants, hotels, BJs, the Crossings, etc) for being a PHS employee. The billing department also requires no weekends- this is a Monday-Friday position and off on holidays. The job itself is also good. Everyday tasks include answering patient phone calls, calling insurance companies to dispute denials, and working claims to submit to insurance companies or preparing denials and accurately billing the patients. A lot to learn, but fun.

Cons

Definitely feel the "growing pains" as the hospital keeps expanding but the department sizes stay the same. Additional hires would benefit the billing department. No room for advancement or promotion. Salary is also on the lower side compared to other health networks, but the benefits do make up for some of this.

Pros

Good pay, better than the competitors with the big names. Good opportunities to keep up with yearly skills review. When I came here, hospital had a poor reputation in the community, but management put great staff in place, upgraded equipment and was finally turning itself around.

Cons

Bought out by big name hospital so salary so pay increases not being given as usual despite doing "more with less", and hours/personnel changed, blaming employee for their work instead of explaining the economic truth. Per diem and part time staff used so management doesn't have to pay benefits or salary of more senior staff person. Lost some great staff people
