Pros

They do have great benefits and 401K plan.

Cons

Employee's were extremely overworked with very very little time to complete projects. Quick turnaround projects is very real however there is such a thing as not having enough time to complete a project at a level of quality it needs. I was once asked why I could not complete a project on-time and my answer was that I was working on 5 other client projects all having the same deadline that week, I was told that I would need to work more hours after work which became a weekly issue every week. I gave the company feedback saying we needed to hire more designers to help support the workload; their solution was to hire more account and project managers. I once asked a project manager how her workload was, her response was that it was so light that most days she spent it on her couch watching television and if she even thought about a project that she would count it on her timesheet to complete her 8 hour workday. Not only the designers were spread extremely thin, writers too were overly worked. I frequently would have to wait until a day before an internal review (even hours before a meeting) to receive copy updates in order to make design updates. I let my manager know about that issue frequently and her response was to just bug them until they gave me the copy I needed. We were working remotely at the time and there were no activities for co-workers to stay connected in any way; in fact me and my co-workers created virtual events in order for us to stay connected. I also brought this issue up to management and it was never addressed. They do have a bookclub however HR heavily regulates the books that are selected. All of the books spoke to how to be more productive and work harder in the office. I felt like my voice was never heard, my design skills were not utilized to their best ability, and I was used as a cog in a machine quite literally. I believe I was let go because I began to voice my opinions louder to others. Honestly though, being let-go was the best thing to have happened to me because a massive weight was released from my shoulders and I found a studio that very much appreciates me.

Pivot Design Response

We appreciate your candid feedback and wish we had been able to address it directly while you were here. Project timelines and employee workloads are two things we continually try to balance as an agency. We’re always open to team suggestions and solutions, and, based on employee feedback, we have invested in additional staff, software, and a new agency structure to support our creatives so they have time to focus on their craft. There is no doubt that COVID has made it challenging to create staff connections while giving everyone the freedom to engage at their own comfort level. Over the last two years, Pivot has hosted many virtual and in-person activities and events to build team camaraderie and relationships—something we’ve always been passionate about. We empower employee-led Task Forces to organize many of these gatherings. We’re happy to hear that you’ve found a good fit at your new studio and wish you well.

Pros

I have worked at several agencies and Pivot truly sets the bar for talented colleagues. Across all departments, the caliber of the employees is top notch. And not only are they smart, they are kind, caring and collaborative. The Executive Leadership team is also truly dedicated to retaining said talent so there is a focus on competitive benefits, salary and fostering a sense of community and fun. Beyond that, the ELT not only listens, but acts. They solicit feedback and proactively implement that feedback to consistently improve the agency. We recently implemented new agency work flow protocols in direct response to employee feedback. In addition to a talented internal team, Pivot is focused on wellness oriented clients who HELP the world be a better place. If you work at Pivot, you can rest assured that the work you contribute to is important and meaningful. And let’s be honest, agency life can be hard and it is certainly not for everyone. Deadlines and pressure are unavoidable in this line of work. However, the overall work/life balance is VERY fair and if you need help, help will be provided. There is also a very fair mentality in regards to life requirements outside of work. If you need to drop your kid at school or go to the dentist, as long as your work is handled and you have alerted your team, it is not a problem whatsoever.

Cons

Agency life can be unpredictable. If you are not someone who thrives in a fast paced environment and can easily change gears, this is not the right fit.

Pros

The beauty of Pivot is that there is no ceiling and no guard rails for how far you can go and grow. If you are motivated and smart, you will succeed. If you have ideas, you can make them happen. Liz (our President) is not stuck in her ways and is always open to finding better and new ways to do things. You have a voice at Pivot and you are not just a number or a cog in a wheel. She schedules 1:1s with employees at all levels of the agency to hear what they have to say. I've been at 3 other agencies and have never experienced that type of transparency and access to senior management. In terms of employee benefits, Pivot has a very generous vacation policy. Week shut down between xmas and NYE, the typical holidays plus 4 days for Memorial Day, President's day, and summer hours. And Liz genuinely wants people to have a work/life balance. That's not to say there are not the occasional late nights or stressful weeks, but the office is generally empty by 6pm. What other agency can really say that? In my few short years at Pivot, I've truly embraced all the opportunities and challenges that have come my way. Working with smart and fun people sets Pivot apart. We all come together for a common goal to do great work and make our clients happy.

Cons

Expectations are high and if you cannot deliver, it can be stressful. You must learn how to prioritize, be efficient, and be a true team player. If you want to come to work to just earn a pay check and not be productive or push yourself, Pivot is not for you.
