Pros
Interesting work and if employed by the right dept. you may be treated well. A health plan and pension plan. A place to build your resume if you have little experience.
Cons
No merit raises, so the slug sitting next to you doing nothing gets the same raise you do. Also due to this, long time employees are sometimes rewarded with managerships (which brings higher pay) without training, leading to managerial problems because they are clueless. Salary is on the low side to start with, but health and pension plans are not as good as they used to be. You may wait years for a raise, and when it comes you find that Huckleberry has raised the amounts you will pay for health and pension, so a 3% raise may only be 1% in actuality.
