Great work life balance, strange politics and low pay and low chance for advancement in offices not at HQ - Sales and Marketing Assistant Perseus Books Group Employee Review

Pros

Summer Fridays, great vacation perks. No guilt over taking vacation, sick days or being out for doctor appointments, lunch breaks or errand runs. Big company with a big list. Mostly employees are organized hard workers.

Cons

Low pay and no opportunity for advancement for assistants. Especially in staelite offices, it is better to work at head quarters. The company has merged so many times that there is bad blood between department heads and it trickles down to everyone. Strange politics, spite and purposefully not doing your work to screw up another department are not fun things to deal with on the job. HR is not accessible, you are on your own to make it work with a bad boss or quit. Systems are poorly set up and training is sparse. There is a culture of management blaming those below them for their poor work, there is no hope for promotions or valuing of talented employees in this kind of environment.

Pros

Almost all people who work here are professional, kind and nice. People are good to go for beer with and care about their work. Office itself is really nice, with a little cafe with nice coffee machine.

Cons

The leadership is AWOL. This allows bad apples to dominate. And there is one bad apple in particular... . Anyone who has worked in NY OFFICE knows who I mean. This person gets away with behavior that wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else. I'm talking about really cruel, divisive, borderline harassment type behavior. What does this person have on the CEO? We all wonder.
