Pros

Every full-stack eng I've met is super talented technically with great work experience and schools. Honestly a bit intimidating when you look at everyone's resumes. But they're all very nice, patient, and willing to go above and beyond to ramp you up. Everyone is super invested in each other, which is rare to see esp. coming from 2000+ company where engineers couldn't care less about product or team. If you're good and work hard, you get to work on some bleeding edge stuff and ship entire features or products yourself. Don't think you get this much ownership in much larger labs. Learning a ton and have friends that find Perplexity so impressive from the products + position they are in.

Cons

Long hours if you're on tight deadline to ship. Scope creep can be real as we continue to add new capabilities to various products. The models getting better also means we're constantly revising roadmap to ensure we're shipping the latest AI capabilities. It's what makes Comet so dope but does take up time and weights into weekends sometimes as well. Founders are super intense but given how competitive the AI industry is, it makes sense. NYC hours and SF hq also means some late night as you stay up with the team. The team does fly you out often if needed, so it's not a bad thing if you like travel.

Pros

A lot of others say this but honestly can't emphasize it enough - these are some of the smartest, most humble people I've worked with. Some lead entire GTM, data science, engineering teams, etc. to return to an IC role. They simply love to build. You rarely get to see that energy in tech companies nowadays. Many people here genuinely believe Perplexity is the future of search and are resilient when things get tough. I am quite excited to work next to them. The founders keep the bar high and fire fast when things aren't working; it used to bother me initially but realized these individuals are actually happier at other companies, which makes me realize we're doing the right thing.

Cons

The downside of working with great people is that they're truly obsessive eg don't do much except build. They're always thinking about the product, the research, users, etc. which means you don't feel like you get time to do other things. You definitely get your weekends off but sometimes expected to crank through weekends for a major product launch. However, seeing millions of people dive into the feature you built and praise it on Twitter, Reddit, etc. is super rewarding. I can definitely see culture shock at the pace of shipping.
