Pros
I wholeheartedly believe in the value of hospice volunteers and found working with them very rewarding. I likewise enjoyed many of my co-workers and believe that those who are providing direct patient care and bereavement support are hard-working and have their hearts in the right place. Patients and family members report above average satisfaction with the care they receive.
Cons
I experienced a distinct lack of support and an inadequate understanding of the skills and tasks involved in running the volunteer program. The pay scale for this position tells me that upper management shares a lack of understanding of what the position entails. Compared to national average salaries for hospice volunteer coordinators, the pay I received was lower than the national low average. Regarding work environment, PHC recently moved to a smaller building and many employees, including myself, were shifted into small cubicles. While this may work for some people, I require a much quieter environment to do my best work.
