Great opportunity to work on excellent projects for hand-picked clients that both leverage my deep technical expertise and allow me to branch into new areas as appropriate. While consulting and self-employment are a significant challenge, the rewards are beyond comparison to most employment opportunities.
Cons
The nature of the individual consultant is very feast-or-famine: when business is good, there's often more than one can handle. However, when the pipeline starts to empty, things can get very scary -- one has to be prepared to manage risk.
