Pros

pro-deal discounts 100% remote, but I do not consider this a 'pro' for a job, it's a requirement for me.

Cons

It's nearly impossible to get promoted. It feels highly nepotistic. There are constantly shifting goalposts. People are overloaded. Teams are under-resourced. The company is trying to do way many things, rather than a few things well. Turnover is high. No 401k matching. 'Unlimited' vacation really depends on the team and manager. Lack of transparency and pay equality. People often end up getting bitter about being overloaded, no COLA increases, no opportunities for advancement, get burnout, then quit. Product doesn't understand engineering capacity and over-promise, and nobody wins. Hiring and promotion practices are questionable. All staff engineers are men.

While we can’t discuss specifics of your employment here at the Company on this public platform we can suggest for you to hold a meeting with your HR Business Partner to discuss in more detail. What I can offer here publicly is to address the broader concerns. At Outside Inc., we’re committed to investing in our employees’ growth and development through various programs to include two learning platforms, and a successful mentorship program. We believe career growth is multi-faceted and we encourage employees to actively participate in driving and shaping their career paths. When it comes to vacation, we don’t utilize the term “unlimited vacation” but call it “flex time away.” This empowers the employees to take time away from work while ensuring business needs are being met. Our policy allows employees to request time off with their “Hiring Manager’s” approval, while considering team coverage and project deadlines. This approach provides a healthy work-life balance while maintaining operational efficiency. We encourage employees to discuss their time-off needs with their Managers to ensure alignment with both individual and business priorities. We are also committed to fair and competitive compensation practices. We regularly evaluate our salary ranges using market data, industry benchmarks and cost of living analyses to ensure they are aligned with industry standards. While your perspective on workload and burnout is listed, our internal data suggests a different picture. We encourage open communication and urge employees to discuss any challenges they face with their Manager or their HR Business Partner to find supportable solutions. Finally, while it may appear our staff engineers are predominantly male, we want to highlight that we have a strong female leadership within our engineering organization including our VP of Engineering and our Senior Manager of Engineering. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and recognize the importance of having gender representation at all levels. We are dedicated to providing a positive work environment where employees feel valued and supported.
