Pros
I have run into so many leaders at Optum who value your humanity and I've tried to replicate that when I led teams as well. It's contagious. It is filled with really brilliant and hard-working people. The majority of the people I worked with were passionate about our members and clients. They genuinely embrace DEI initiatives. Of all the companies I've been with, I've felt the most authentic at Optum.
Cons
Sometimes they have staff drive some of the DEI initiatives - which is great; however, we have expectations to get a lot done. So some of the chair people are not held as accountable for the actual work since they are on these committees. I ran into only one Senior Leader who I felt was one of the worst leaders I've ever encountered at Optum. He was so bad, I was shocked that he was in his position because I had met so many capable and inspiring leaders in the past. It was his lack of direction, constantly changing priorities, and inability to provide any semblance of clarity that caused me to leave. I still have some resentment because i wished to stay at optum for the long-term and he prevented that.
