Decent Job, bad pay. - Customer Support Representative Optech (Canada) Employee Review

Pros

There is a lot of expertise on the job, as well as the freedom to take on side projects. Several experts in their respective fields work in this place, and it is reflected in their flagship products. The company encourages internal promotion as well. Junior and senior management are responsive to problems and interested (and responsive) to all input including at entry-level. There is a focus on mission, and the energy in all positions reflects that. If you are ambitious and intelligent, there are opportunities for growth as well, regardless of race or gender. Some people are all talk when it comes to workplace equality, these folk are more "do" than "talk", which is refreshing to see. There is also a decent benefits package.

Cons

The main sticking point is pay. In my entry-level position, it was not enough to afford rent, support of someone else and vehicle maintenance in the GTA, and was positioned in a location that is time-consuming and awkward to get to via transit. At least half of peers on team (including shift leads) made do through living with their parents. Other problems included disorganized training structure, difficult interdepartmental communication (mainly ad-hoc). These two smaller problems can be frustrating, but are minor - if worked through - and shouldn't dissuade anyone with ambition as they are similar to problems in many mid-sized organizations.

Pros

The engineering work is very interesting and challenging, and I looked forward to going to work every day. There was relatively little overlap in technical skills among my co-workers, so everyone works together to get things done. Everyone is friendly, easy to get along with, and communicates well among each other.

Cons

Business conditions are always tenuous, resulting in cyclical hiring and layoffs depending on the cash flow within the company.

Pros

Highly dynamic working environment with lots of product development initiatives going on. You tend to work on different application areas with different markets. Gives good exposure to different industries, commercial/space/defense.

Cons

Compensation lower than industry standard. Need to increase the compensation for engineering staff to levels as surveyed by OSPE/PEO for them to retain their talent.
