Pros

Helping the underrepresented community and the diversity within the organization as a whole.

Cons

Everything else. Despite the purpose of the organization being to help the community, it does more harm than good. There's no structure or organization put in place, which means cases fall through the cracks - causing irreparable harm to the clients they serve. They work to bring more cases in but forget the clients they already have. How they continue to operate is beyond me. Staff is overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. High turn over rates (and they know it but refuse to do anything about it - they silence us if we raise concerns). If you care about your well being, and bar license, STAY FAR FAR AWAY!

Pros

Overall, knowing the work I do made an impact on the lives of underserved communities is wonderful. We have a FUN committee that will host social events for staff to take a break from work and spend time together. I enjoy working with my department team and supervisor because of their empathy, collaboration, welcoming-nature, and dedication. The diversity of cultures is really rich here. Although I wear multiple hats and have tasks to do every hour, I do have work life balance in my role as work doesn't follow me home.

Cons

No two weeks look the same so it requires me to be high functioning, flexible and adaptable. It's a non profit so job security and advancement is limited based on funding availability and salary can be low. Retention rate is low so there are always staff changes and organizational restructuring every 1-2 months, which makes it harder to have structure/policies in place. Programs can be siloed because we are so focused helping our designated clients. It's been an ongoing process to improve collaboration between programs with referrals.
