Pros

The people that make up this company are by far the best thing about working here. This is a family owned business, with executive management heavily involved in the day to day operations. The care and interest they show in growing the business is evident not only in their work ethic but in how they treat their employees. There is a very friendly vibe which makes for a pleasant and lively work environment. The company also gives back to its employees with many luncheons, appreciations and fun employee activities scheduled throughout the year. Every holiday we participate in toy drives and other endeavors to give back to the community. Executive management gives out bonuses end of year as well. The owner also personally gives every employee $50 cash for their birthday. The main building is nestled right on the banks of the James River which makes for a peaceful and scenic lunch break for any employee that decides to make use of the deck with picnic tables. Pay is fair and competitive for the local market and the health plan is up to par with the best. There is a 401 K program with matching employer contribution available to all employees after their first year of employment as well.

Cons

When things get busy, the job can become very stressful at times. They do not close for all bank holidays.

Pros

There were a few solid employees in non-management roles who were great to work with. Some team members were supportive and helped make difficult days more manageable.

Cons

In my opinion, the work environment often felt toxic and fear-based. Leadership’s style contributed to stress, and I noticed what I believed were safety and compliance concerns. I personally observed situations that, to me, looked like nepotism — for example, key leadership in Operations and HR were married, and in my view this sometimes created a conflict of interest that complicated HR processes. I also felt that family members within the company appeared to receive preferential treatment, which impacted fairness and morale. At one point, after raising a concern about a family member’s conduct, I soon found myself being let go, which reinforced my perception that favoritism outweighed fairness. Expectations to work through inclement weather and what I felt were unpaid extra hours added to my frustration. Overall, I did not feel valued or supported, and I would not recommend this company to people seeking a healthy culture.
