Pros

Being a consultant is very different than working at a large or medium sized corporation: It isn't for everyone. You have to be ok with working on different projects (sometimes at the same time). You have to be ok with a certain level of uncertainty. You have to be ok with not waiting for someone to give you micro-level directions. You need a lot of self-motivation. For the right engineer, it is liberating and empowering. For the wrong type, it can feel chaotic and disorganized. There's always new things to work on at OCI. If you want to try something new or transition into a different part of technology, they will help find a way for you to do it. But you have to follow through on your end. It isn't magic, you have to put in the work and invest in yourself as well. If you want to double-down and go deep into one technical area, they'll help you do that as well. There's so many extremely talented people here, it is pretty remarkable given the size of the organization. There seem seems to be a SME level expert in just about everything that you can go ask for help or advice. The people really do care and try their best. This goes for the engineers and all the non-technical people like PMs, BAs and administrative staff. The leadership team has made a commitment to making a place to work that is open to all. The result is a culture that doesn't tolerate toxic people. You can have healthy disagreements without toxicity. The PTO policy takes some time to get used to but is pretty good once you understand how it works.

Cons

Compensation is decent but benefits need to be improved. Employer-funded training classes need to be improved. Would love to see more events designed to bring more employees together to build connections and relationships. Remote work due to COVID made it tough to get together, of course, but maybe more virtual events. OCI has a relatively flat leadership hierarchy. For engineers who want to just be great engineers, it doesn't matter, and can actually be a good thing. For those that have a desire to move into management, there are few opportunities.

Pros

An overall great group of people who understand how to work effectively with a remote distributed team. Their process is streamlined and they hold teams to a high standard. Compensation and benefits are excellent.

Cons

As is inevitable with a company of their size that needs to staff up new projects quickly, a handful of the engineers I interacted with were less than stellar. To the credit of the company's process and standards, those team members did not last, but watching them struggle while they were there was painful.

Pros

I grew as a professional while at OCI.

Cons

Lack of organizational direction and industry understanding by next generation of leadership resulting in hemorrhaging staff and multiple rounds of layoffs.
