Pros

Unique missions with huge impact, and great sense of pride performing work that directly supports our national security. Experience gained by working in program offices, DoD contracts, and acquisitions.

Cons

Lack of diversity (comments concerning gender stereotypes were frequent --- generally, there is a hyperfocus on this topic). Have not experienced this in private sector corporations. Witnessed lack of professionalism in management and leadership behaviors (trash talking employees and high-grades spending significant time gossiping and socializing instead of working. Noticed a trend where many would goof off while a smaller percentage of coworkers would bear a higher workload --- essentially a lack of performance management by leadership. In addition, the IPT construct that pervades acquisitions unfortunately has resulted in ineffectual collaboration --- lack of defined roles and responsibilities, and enormous time wasted in meetings. In turn, this environment can lend itself to bad behavior (bullying, shirking responsibilities, and more). Colleagues have expressed similar experiences, leading to a conclusion that these issues are systemic and ubiquitous.
