Pros

Smart people trying to make a difference

Cons

My 12 months at NALA were defined by poor leadership, constant mismanagement, and a lack of vision or alignment across the company. Employees are treated as disposable, with little to no guidance, growth pathways, or ability to contribute meaningfully to the roles they were hired for. Turnover is extremely high, more than half of my colleagues were hired and fired within my short tenure. Many new hires quickly realized that HR had oversold the role, creating false expectations about what the day-to-day work actually entails. There is also a clear hierarchy of value placed on teams: engineering and data are prioritized, while other functions are neglected, despite their importance in making the overall business run effectively. The culture is toxic and exclusionary. Misogyny regularly surfaces in meetings, creating an environment where women, in particular, struggle to succeed. In short: this is not a company I would recommend for anyone looking for stability, growth, or a respectful workplace

Pros

* Awesome mission: To reduce cross-border payment times and fees for Africa (mostly) - and still make a profit * An open and honest culture. Great people team. * Fun social activities to get people talking across departments. * Engineering: Only hire senior software engineers (use Claude to do the grunt-coding work).

Cons

* Quite a few managers left in 2025 and I don't know why. * Round of layoffs late in 2025.

Pros

NALA is a growing start-up / scale up, this comes with growing pains, learning opportunities and sometimes ambiguity. For the right person, with the right mentality, who values growth, ownership, intensity and hard work, it's an amazing place to be. A few years here will accelerate your career. This type of environment won't be right for everyone, but the exposure to execs, the opportunity to contribute and shape the direction of the product/company is massive

Cons

Sometimes their is ambiguity / uncertainty around projects or initiatives at the company. This can feel a little paralysing and some people won't enjoy that. As such, the pace of change can feel frantic as the company evolves from this 0-1 to 1 - 10 phase. As a small, young business the benefits are not amazing, but compensation is good.
