Flexible hours, great learning opportunities, excellent research facilities.

Too much paperwork on research protocols. Lack of incentive to conduct cut-edge, risk-taking research. Extremely slow at building new facilities.

Great people. Great research. Very supportive of employees. Lots of opportunities to learn. Like all places, it really depends on who you are working with and what your interests are. My lab was great about respecting and listening to all members of the team and encouraging everyone to participate in formulating projects. More experienced scientists were always ready to help teach and share their knowledge and serve as informal mentors. Weekly research seminars allowed plenty of opportunities to present new ideas and early research data and to receive helpful feedback.

Some of the gov't beaurocracy. But its not too big a deal.
