Pros

Exciting science, interesting people, a continuous learning environment. Like being at a world class university, including extracurricular clubs and interest groups. Located near Washington DC, so just a day trip to monuments and museums. Baltimore is an hour drive. Shenandoah National Park is ~3 hours away.

Cons

Government bureaucracy (though less than at most government agencies). Each of the 27 different components (institutes, centers, and offices) has its own structure, culture, priorities, budget, and resources. There’s vast inequality among them.

Pros

Working with the some of the smartest scientists and clinicians in the world. So many learning opportunities. Kind patients. Allowed time to care for patients as there is no pressure of quotas by health insurance.

Cons

Nursing management can be verbally abusive with frequent retaliation and intimidation. As most older nurses have worked there for most of their career, they are dismissive of new perspectives and resistant to evidence-based practice.
