Pros

Strong technical support and structured workflow - as a Setting Out Engineer, I always have access to the equipment, systems, and documentation needed for high-quality project delivery. Exposure to diverse and complex projects – working across rail, infrastructure, and urban developments offers a dynamic environment and continuous technical growth. Culture of trust and autonomy – the company encourages independent decision-making on site, which fosters a strong sense of ownership and professional confidence. Open and approachable management – feedback and suggestions are welcomed, especially when they lead to process improvements or greater efficiency. Ongoing professional development – Murphy invests in its people through internal training, certifications, and mentoring, supporting long-term career progression.

Cons

Project diversity requires adaptability – each day brings new challenges, which keeps the role exciting and far from repetitive. Field-to-office coordination is improving – the implementation of unified reporting and data management systems is ongoing and showing promising signs of streamlining operations.

Pros

Exposure to large infrastructure projects, modern equipment and technology, and few genuinely capable people who are good to work with. Some of the technical staff are knowledgeable and hardworking.

Cons

My experience internally was completely different to how the company presents itself externally. The main issue for me was the culture and quality of management. There often seemed to be very little structure, accountability or clear direction, and too much depended on a small number of competent people carrying projects and solving problems for others (careful - if you're capable, high risk of being used). Line management was poor in my experience. Communication was inconsistent, support depended heavily on personalities, and recognition for hard work was limited. Pay was low for the level of responsibility and stress involved, bonuses were minimal if any, and promotions often felt difficult unless you were closely aligned with the right people. There was also a lot of politics, favouritism and unfairness across parts of the business, which over time created what I would personally describe as a toxic working environment. Many employees openly had very little confidence in management, and after spending enough time there, I understood why. The company speaks positively about H&S and mental health, but personally I did not always feel people were genuinely supported. Let's say, the company speak about it a lot, and it ends here. There are few good people in the business, but overall I found the environment draining, frustrating and not somewhere I would recommend long term if you value strong leadership, fairness and professional development.

Pros

- Opportunity to work on large-scale projects of all types, - Opportunity to learn how to use new measurement equipment, software, and measurement technologies, - Independence in your role and in your relationships with clients, - Opportunity to work on projects spread across the globe, - Full supervision and support from a supervisor or manager.

Cons

Nothing that I would consider a significant flaw.
