Pros

The rank-and-file are the best you will find anywhere. Creative, responsible, hardworking, and passionate.

Cons

Through smoke-and-mirrors about their stellar reputation, this company has attracted a dedicated and creative staff who typically work 50-60 hours a week (no overtime) and more. These creative, intelligent, productive people work their tails off hoping for commendation, achievement, and advancement, and hopefully a light at the end of the toxic tunnel. Last month’s layoffs of over 10% of the staff wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel. It was a train heading in their direction. The process was executed suddenly and harshly by the inept “Chief People Officer” and her minions. The public excuse was about the tariffs and other financial constraints. But that’s the side story. The true story is extensive mismanagement of company dollars and ridiculous changes of direction, due to an insatiable need to satisfy the ego of the CBO. Here's the truth: After hemorrhaging millions of dollars on vanity projects meant to flatter or satisfy this CBO, including poorly designed product lines and the expensive and impractical renovations of several areas of the HQ facility (which the company doesn’t even own, by the way!) the CEO apologetically *RESCINDED* the annual merit bonus … after it had already been announced. The reason? Poor profit margins in 2024. Quite an insult after it became common knowledge that Executive Team had been treated to an all expenses paid luxury spa retreat in Hawaii just a few months earlier… plus the over-$2 million renovation of the employee lunch-room, the installation of 2 pickleball courts, etc. etc. etc. I guess the staff was supposed to feel “taken care of” by the weekly snacks and Thursday popcorn. I think being spared the daily harassment and abuse by the top leaders of the company, and flouting the squandering of company assets, might have gone farther to engender true appreciation and improving sinking morale. Oh, and those “Great Place to Work” awards? Like all the other awards that were bought, they were also likely purchased.

Pros

The working team are great to work with, collaborative, creative and hardworking. They support each other and help make Munchkin bearable to work for.

Cons

Munchkin has got to be one of the worst place to work for. Ironically they are certified as "Great Place to Work" for many years. Words that best describe that place include dictatorship, fear-mongering and high ego. From an outsider perspective, Munchkin looks great on resume, with all the awards they've won throughout the years but it was a nightmare to be on the inside. Decision made are not necessarily best for the business, but best for the ego of Brand Design department lead. Fear lingers in the office, especially for teams that have to work with, or are part of Brand Design Department. With the CBO's needs to have control over everything, it means most team work in fear. The C Level does whatever Brand Design wants (she is untouchable) and Human Resource can't stand up for employees and can't keep things confidential. Munchkin expects loyalty out of employee, but anyone can get fired at any moment. Employees stay silent because speaking up or doing the right thing for the business often makes them a target. Current staff fear termination, while former employees fear legal threats. High turnover and workforce reductions have significantly increased the workload for remaining staff. Coupled with a toxic work environment, this has created an unsustainable situation that continues to drive employees away. For many of us who have left the company, we are glad that Munchkin is behind us.
