Pros

-Great discount on food, hard to beat: 40% for food, 25% on all other items. You can charge to your “account” so your pet never runs out of food -Some really great people, who genuinely care -At the beginning, you feel really important :) -Prices are usually the cheapest you can find for these nicer foods!

Cons

-There are some straight up evil people in high ranking positions at Mud Bay -Some of these people even covered up a sexual assault that happened IN STORE at Mud Bay. The person actually got a pay out. I’ve heard of many other staff being put in situations that could be considered sexual harassment. -They don’t actually care about you -Pay is okay, but pretty bad if you don’t live in inner city Portland/inner city Seattle, most other pet stores pay the same wages with less B.S. -They throw you to the wolves a lot, never really educated us about DCM just gave us handouts and told us to tell people it wasn’t true, added some grain friendly options but still offered many foods that had mostly plant based protein (the root of the problem) in their food - namely: Acana, Zignature, Taste of the Wild. These foods are just as bad as Hills, IAMS, etc. with fillers and B.S. but we are expected to sell them (and food with unstudied, exotic proteins!) -They were horrible managing mask mandates & anti-black conversation in the workplace, also keep an eye on how many BIPOC you see in Mud Bay stores - that should tell you something about their hiring process. Myself included, a lot of the stores I worked at were entirely white & entirely women, cmon Mud Bay - diversify! -Training is a mess, expect not to know anything for the first 3-6 months of your employment there if they hired you without experience -Raises are rare, they encourage promotion within the company but the money you make to do ASM vs. Staff, is NOT worth it

Pros

The employee discount is great, best benefit of the job in my opinion. You get 40% off all products. My immediate team and manager were absolutely wonderful and the work atmosphere was great. You get to pet cute animals every day and help people solve their pet-related problems. When I started, there was great training and education, but that has recently gone downhill.

Cons

Even though my team was awesome, you can be sent to other locations when there are call-outs, and not every store has a good manager and co-workers. It felt a bit hostile when I went to work at other locations. Upper management is a total joke. They are controlling and make decisions that impact store employees without consulting those who actually work in retail.
