Pros

Working at Minerva has been really great. I'm about 4 months in and feel like I am in full swing and actively contributing. The onboarding process was very thorough, which helped speed up the "ramping up" period and made me feel comfortable quickly. I enjoy working on the product, working in education makes me feel good about what I do every day. The team is very friendly, technical discussions are civil, and you have the opportunity to voice your opinions and present new ideas. It's an older codebase with some legacy parts, but it is changing and being modernized, it's great to see the progress even in the short time I've been here. It's an exciting time for the company as they are taking on new partners and expanding beyond the Minerva Schools. This means the usual growing pains, but that is expected for a startup that has grown quite a bit in the past year or two. It feels like a great time to join as there are new developments every day. I came from a big company, so one of the pleasant surprises is that the processes here are really polished, some even more so than my previous (large) employer. I don't think this is the case for every startup. The interview, onboarding, developer workflows, and release processes have all been thought out and it really makes a difference. There isn't a lot of putting out fires and I work a typical 8-hour workday. If I work later, it's just because I'm interested in something and want to continue on it before stopping for the day. I was remote previously so working remotely wasn't a big adjustment. Minerva handles remote work well and there are employees in many time zones. I work US east coast hours so my mornings are quieter and the afternoons have most of my meetings, though it's only 1-2 a day. They do a good job about keeping meetings to a minimum so you can focus on coding. It's really checked all my boxes: remote, sane working hours and environment, good technical processes, and a product I believe in.

Cons

- The legacy parts of the codebase can be hard to work in, especially backbone/marionette (though this is actively being improved. The new UI code is in React and the Python/Django backend has been upgraded quite a bit) - The transition from software that is used exclusively by a fully-online university into a full-featured product that is sold/licensed to partners can feel a little cumbersome at times.
