Underwhelming, disorganized, self-promoting - Anonymous employee Millennium Challenge Employee Review

Pros

This agency pays well outside the typical pay range for any given position, conspicuously so since it's supposed to focus on reducing poverty.

Cons

MCC's ratings on the Employee Viewpoint Survey have slid precipitously since the current CEO took over, and her shortcomings as a CEO have trickled down into middle management. The most recent survey (which was conveniently not published along with the bulk of other agencies' surveys) showed serious doubts among the majority of the staff about the integrity of the leadership. Overall the atmosphere is negative and focused on the promotion of a few key personalities, not the agency mission. If you're looking for a job, keep looking.

Pros

You’ll get to learn from real experts in their respective fields, and also contribute to programs that make meaningful impacts in partner countries.

Cons

As with all government work, sometimes there can be a bit of bureaucracy. Though MCC is less bureaucratic than other agencies, and junior officers also have the opportunity to sit in important meetings and be involved in important conversations, sometimes it can feel like your skills are underused for things such as taking notes, managing calendars, etc. People are also really committed to what they do, so it can feel like you also have to work all the time to demonstrate your commitment to the work and the mission. And there will be late night/early morning meetings, given the international nature of the work.

Pros

Great Federal government benefits (although the new administration may kill them) Decent work colleagues

Cons

No flexibility as of January 20, 2025 Political appointees are usually not qualified over my tenure of 10 plus years Too much management (i.e., many layers of decisions so nothing is done smoothly) Lost control of the mission and it is mainly a political environment not looking out for the original intention of the agency.
