Pros

Learned about surveying, drafting and plan preparation. Other than that there wasn't much else to create a great working atmosphere. I received a pay cheque every two weeks.

Cons

Management in the company lacks experience. Because certain staff hold distinct licences this automatically makes them "business managers". The board of directors and upper management are like the mob, you will join their "family" when they see fit. They proudly advertise the company is 100% employee owned. What they don't tell you is you will most likely never have shares or bonuses. If a bonus is paid out you are made to feel entirely grateful that "they" decided to give you a bonus. Bonus are not paid out on hard work and dedication like they claim. Wages are not comparable to other companies like they claim. Since leaving Midwest Surveys I have found wages to be a lot more compared to the wage they paid me. When asking for a raise, the excuses come out... you're over paid, you're not worth it, wait a couple of months for your review. Employee reviews are a complete and utter joke. When raising a concern to the office manager, you must be careful of what you ask and say as it can turn around to mark you on the back. You are expected to work evenings and weekends when times are busy. When times are slow the layoffs start. Huge amounts of fat in the company, very poor hiring decisions. I watched a guy get hired in September only to be laid off at the beginning of October, why did you hire him and wreck his life? Very poor decisions come from Calgary. They have appreciation dinners for staff and try to uplift spirits and create a façade that staff are doing an outstanding job. The over turn rate of staff will most likely be the highest in the surveying industry. Thousands of staff in the survey industry have experience Midwest Surveys lifestyle and are glad they left. Had numerous times when I was talking to lawyers about the practice at Midwest.

Money is good but you will have to really work your best to earn it.

Pros

The gobs of money I make from equity in the company, the pay cheque. They all afford me fancy cars and multiple homes along with retirement savings and being able to fund my children's education.

Cons

For too many years I have felt ashamed for making copious amounts of money while other staff struggle to make a living. Whay i have gathered by being a shareholder is its our job to protect our investment and claim as much revenue as humanly possible in the shortest amount of time possible with the least amount if work involved believe this needs to change. As an organization, we need to treat ALL staff on the playing field the same way. We need to understand that its not just ourselves making money but ALL of the staff make money for this company. The non shareholder are the biggest reason all of us are filthy rich. That says something. We need to share the wealth with everyone in this company equally to retain staff. Not everyone can afford to live on $23 an hour anymore. We need to do our best as owners to ensure that everyone employed with us is financially taken care of.

As you know, Midwest's shareholder group is comprised of individuals from various positions throughout the company; administrative, field, technical, professional, and management. This is one of the best things about our ownership structure, it's representative of all positions within the company. You're right, it does take every employee to achieve success. That's how Midwest has defined success in its Value Statement. "Our success is defined by engaged employees, loyal clients, and a bright future for us all." I'm open to discussing this further, identifying where you feel we're not living our values. Finally, I'd like to share that Midwest routinely benchmarks employee pay ranges against industry-based market data.
