Middlebury Interactive Languages

Is this your company?

If it weren't for my co-workers in the Provo office, working here would have been unbearable. - Lackey Middlebury Interactive Languages Employee Review

Pros

Employees in the Provo office were excellent to work with. I made some amazing friendships there. I was able to learn some valuable skills that have carried over to other phases of my career.

Cons

Poor sales practices. The sales team would promise customers features that were only in the earliest developmental phases, and failure to deliver would be blamed on the content or dev teams. Upper management has little to no idea what their employees actually do. If management is to be believed, MIL's courses just appear out of thin air. Management had no respect for contract employees. Attempts to transition to full-time, salaried positions consisted of firing contractors and forcing more responsibility onto full-time employees. High stress. Hiring and promoting employees, not on merit, but on relationships. They write entire courses and launch whole platforms without any customer feedback on effectiveness, ease of use, etc. They closed a whole office and laid off dozens of people only to be baffled when it didn't magically fix the company.

Pros

The job is intense but the pay is great especially considering you get room and board. The language directors are very supportive of new teachers as well.

Cons

The intensity of the schedule takes adjustment, but it's only for a month.

Pros

MIL provides a rare opportunity to work in Vermont for a fun, growing tech company. If you love education and language all the better. Staff is an interesting mix of native Vermonters, ed/tech leaders and PhDs. Most folks get along well and it is fun and collaborative work environment. CEO generally does a good job in being accessible and letting the other members of the exec team focus on their duties. One great perk: employees get Friend of College status, meaning you can access Middlebury College facilities or activities for free or at huge discounts. If you ski, a family pass at the Snow Bowl costs like $250 for the year and there's never any lift lines. You can play unlimited golf at the college course, which is empty all summer, for $200 (no further greens fees). if you like getting outdoors, living in a fun college town and doing interesting work - and helping kids learn - this is a great company for you.

Cons

The major challenges have been related to growth and/or underperformance in certain areas. The Utah office was holdover from an older company and has been closed, which is a good thing although has taken time to migrate functions to Vermont. (if you notice nearly all the 1 star reviews on here come from Provo). The new structure should improve tech functions moving forward. The Middlebury College faculty has issues with K12, the other partner that owns MIL but the college administration is still very supportive.
