Pros

Laid back day to day operations. Potential to work on projects that affect the community. Work indirectly with the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.

Cons

VERY LOW Salary, even for Detroit. No bonuses or raises, any change in salary must be due to a change in job Title. Additional responsibilities will be assigned to you with no change in Job Title as your co-workers are continually laid-off/terminated Company manages the printing of The Detroit News, and the Detroit Free Press, new digital ideas often seen as threatening to employees with stronger print backgrounds. Terrible Benefits, in 2014 my medical insurance deductible was $1500 per year. For one person. It was the only plan offered by the company.

Pros

I liked the various graphic design jobs I had within this company.

Cons

No opportunity for advancement at the level I was at. I had wanted a job in management, but had been turned down even though my qualifications were exceptional.

Pros

It's a well established organization with many good people still working there and it feels like a family working in the lower ranks. An expert with unique skills who does not rock the boat can work there for many years. Relaxing office atmosphere in most departments, some management is willing to have flexible work schedule. Company is owned by a large corporate parents and is a great place to learn what not to do in management if you are looking to hone supervisory skills by osmosis. Company is trying very hard to be innovative.

Cons

Lack of competent leadership in technology and advertising fields. Cronyism on the top levels of management. Not competitive compensation for high tech jobs. Very limited growth opportunities for people who work hard, new responsibilities are assigned as more people are leaving. Big media company with small IT and Newmedia departments makes it harder to get job done right.
