I've been working at Cisco Meraki support team for about 2 years. As an Indian, I talk to other Indians in the office in my mother language (Hindi) during my break or lunchtime. However, once when I was talking to my Indian colleague at my desk during lunch, I was interrupted by my manager (Who doesn't understand Hindi) and they ask us "What are you two talking about?". At first, I thought they are just curious because they don't understand the language; but this happened to other Indians in the team and they were questioned why they speak in Hindi with each other.
A few days later, they re-arranged everyone's desks in the team and didn't let any Indians sit next to each other. When I asked the reason for the new arrangement, I was told "this encourages everyone to speak in English so we can work better together".
That worried me a lot and raised my concern in my one-on-one meeting with my manager, but I was told this is a decision made by the senior management and it's a done deal.
