If you're not too smart, it helps with the situation. - Assistant Department Manager Menards Employee Review

Pros

The job itself is not difficult. There's morning paperwork, setting sale, etc. Waiting on "guests" can be both fun and a challenge. Some appreciate the help and advice. Others want to just pound on you. Co workers can be the same way but I'd say 90% or better are pleasant. You can earn more money with inventory bonus, spifs, profit sharing, etc. If your department is performing ok, the store management generally leaves you alone. There are tools available to make you successful in your job.

Cons

The hours and shifts can be very hard especially if you're trying to get off for family activities. The managers can be very demeaning with underperformers although few get fired. Not much room for creative thinking or thinking outside the box - Menard's has a system, you're expected to be a follower. Scary to think for most employees that this is the best job they'll ever have. As in any retail environment, you get customers you just want to pound the dust out of. When I look at the responsiblities and dollars, the hourly pay seems low but again, that's retail.

Pros

Friendly place of work. Decent pay once in management. Flexible schedule. Bonuses.

Cons

No real incentives other than promoting into a role where you will be stretched too thin, under-appreciated and stuck with lacking leadership.
