Pros

The trademark team (not supervisors) are awesome and help support each other through a ROUGH work environment. I learned a lot about trademark law through the process of trying and failing and learning from my mistakes. Much of it was being thrown in the deep end and lots of self-training, but I definitely grew my knowledge and skills. I was also offered a great salary right out of law school - $98,000 for 1600 billable hours (more pay transparency, fellow workers!!) My work life balance was decent and most of us had hybrid flexibility in choosing when to work from home and when to come in office.

Cons

The words that come to mind when I think of my brief time (less than a year was all I could handle) with Anna McCoy as my boss are: berating, sobbing, aghast, oh no. I am a decently tough person. I've never reached the point of tears at a job before. Throw constructive criticism at me all day long, I'll take it with a smile. But I draw the line at blatant mistreatment. While I was paid well for a beginning attorney, the staff on the trademark team were not compensated nearly well enough. A lot of the work they do overlaps with attorney work. I came into this job feeling so excited and lucky that I got to join a woman-led firm, and have an accomplished woman attorney as my mentor. I really, really tried to make things work, to not take things personally, to stay.

Pros

Coworkers (not supervisors) are great. Flexible hours.

Cons

Awful raises/pay compared to other firms. You could be an above average employee and receive less than a dollar in your annual review for no specific reason at all. For a “prestigious” law firm, you’d think they would be able to pay their hard working staff a respectful rate/salary. Serious lack of quality management. Employees truly are treated as nothing but a number. Reviews are copy and pasted - they do not care about any employees as individual human beings. Favoritism towards supervisors/employees who have stayed with the company for a while. Tasks/responsibilities not delegated equally/equitably amongst team members. Lack of appreciation from Partners on every level. Partners are known to berate employees for small mistakes - occasionally in front of other team members in Zoom meetings. Partners/management ignore any complaints and/or suggestions made by employees. Lack of transparency and communication around expectations. Offer benefits but the insurance is worse than finding obtaining insurance on your own independently. Virtually no room for growth - they’ll make empty promises, though.
