Pros

Initially I started working for a training department that understood training, the ups and downs and challenges, how important it was, and that supported instructional designers and trainers.

Cons

When I got there, everything at this division had been controlled by one person who did not have the scope for the job. A big shakeup happened in management. A number of people were brought in to run several different departments. And quickly, someone young and inexperienced was promoted to a position above his abilities and while he had a different focus, once again, everything become about one focus to the exclusion of all others. And again, since one person can't run all aspects of a company, especially those he doesn't understand, the project was endangered again and went downhill.

Pros

Had a few really exceptional coworkers

Cons

One reason I was hired was to bring in new ideas and work approaches; however, when I tried implementing anything new, some of the “old school higher-ups” would balk and were never open to anything new or better. My management just looked the other way and didn’t support me. As for training, I wasn’t offered much in the way of onboarding other than being told to read a lengthy “standard operating procedures” document. No real opportunities were offered to shadow anyone so I could learn in real-time. A typical work week was 60+ hours and often stretched to 70+. It was exhausting and demoralizing. The job was not sustainable and I’ve never been more relieved to be done with a place. I cannot recommend Maximus as a place to grow your skills or to give your time. Turnover seems to be relatively high at Maximus and there are far better places to work.
