Pros

(I've been working at matter for one year. I've previously worked as a lead ID contractor for the past 10 years at multiple tier-one design studios within SF. I joined Matter because after contracting with them I liked what I saw.) - We work with amazing clients ranging from fortune 500 companies to startups. As a designer you couldn't ask for better variety. - The collaboration between the design teams and client teams is refreshing. Matter works closely with clients, evolving projects together in order to produce well conceived products, as well as happy clients who enjoy sharing that sense of ownership in the design process. - The design team is currently a good mix of very diverse designers from different backgrounds. There is a great mix of junior designers and well-seasoned senior designers in ALL disciplines within the studio: ID, UX/UI, - Max is a very approachable and thoughtful CEO. Not over bearing – he gives his designers creative freedom - but is also fully engaged on all projects. He is a studio leader that likes to be involved in all aspects of the company including rolling up his sleeves and sketching/model making with the design teams.

Cons

- I personally wish we had more tools in our shop, but I'm a shop guy so thats to be expected.

Pros

The people are what really make Matter, Matter. The designers are incredibly talented, dedicated, and go above and beyond on every project or task. The management team was supportive and flexible with my chronic illness, and when I had to take time off to handle family affairs, they went out of their way to ensure that I didn't have to worry about a thing. The team is very close-knit and highly-collaborative with a work hard, play hard, mentality.

Cons

There is a certain level of discipline and self-start initiative required. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. As someone who doesn't like being micro-managed, I appreciated that I was given adequate space to create, adapt, and even help shape processes that impacted the team. However, designers, specifically at the junior level, need more oversight from seniors to help strengthen their skill set in design, presentation, and communication. Lastly, Project Managers could use more support in bolstering the importance of their role within the organization - sometimes it felt like an afterthought.
