Pros

- Many of the reporters are fantastic, diving into some tough journalism and getting results. - An emphasis on strong news, often breaking huge stories. - New reporters will certainly see their skills boosted in different ways as long as they have the right editor backing them. - Pay varies, but can be solid for new hires. The 401K is decent as well as employer contribution.

Cons

- There's no upward growth and management tends to argue among itself hard, often audibly pouring into newsrooms. - You're forced to drive cross-state to attend too many drinking parties and meetings that could have been emails, and you won't be compensated for the extra time put in. - Equipment is awful. There's a push for better video, but the company will provide you with old phones and just about nothing else. People barely know how to use any video-editing software. - Some management is clueless and some employees will be completely ignored, with no help given to helping them develop skills or find leads. - You'll often see co-workers visibly crying or frustrated because of poor management that demands everything from employees but refuses to give anything in return. - On that note, the turnover rate is huge. The past year saw a mass exodus of plenty of reporters and staff in other teams, such as sales. There are significantly better opportunities elsewhere. - There is a massive "bro" culture. Holiday parties consist of drinking. Outings always involve sports. (This could be a pro for you, but the 50-year-old men acting like frat boys is embarrassing.) - There's not much paid time off, including sick time. You'll need to be stingy with it. You also can't carry any of it over into a new year. - The social media content is a mess. In between actual news you'll see completely inane posts about Airbnb locations or articles to buy things to generate more cash for the company. The commenters are also some of the most nasty people you can imagine and never have anything positive to say about your work.
