The remaining staff reporters and editors are great. The work environment is respectful, friendly, and fun. You'll be able to cover important and interesting stories.
Cons
The newspaper has relied heavily upon freelancers in recent years, hiring very few staff reporters. For freelancers, compensation is low and benefits are non-existent. There is no job security, and little prospect for internal advancement. If you're young, use the opportunity to assemble a portfolio, then move on. The newspaper is part of the Newhouse family empire.
